Moving Together: Fitness, Community, and the Search for Belonging

This Cooper Conversation will explore the connections between fitness, community, and belonging, asking how shared physical activity can strengthen social bonds and improve well-being. A panel of local experts will discuss how movement—whether through organized sports, group exercise, or community recreation—can combat isolation, foster inclusion, and promote both physical and mental health. The event ties to this year’s E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues theme, “Belonging: Finding Connection in a Lonely World,” and is hosted in collaboration with Future Healers. Open to all students! All are welcome to attend!

This conversation will feature:

  • Joel Houston, President, Pickleball Lincoln
    Joel has served Pickleball Lincoln since 2018 and teaches pickleball to all levels. He has taught professionally for years and has hosted clinics with several nationally known instructors.
  • Dr. Anh Nguyen, PT, DPT, Director, Pickleball Lincoln
    Dr. Nguyen works as a physical therapist at Madonna Rehabilitation Center and serves as a director of Pickleball Lincoln. He is also a volleyball coach for the High Flyers Volleyball Club and serves as an interviewer for admissions at UNMC.
  • Hattie Roberts, Group Fitness Coordinator, UNL Campus Recreation
    Hattie leads the Group Fitness Program of instructors, interns, and graduate assistants to maintain successful and effective initiatives at the institution.
  • Isaac Wedige, Special Programs and Experience Director, Cooper YMCA of Lincoln
    Isaac manages and implements special programs at the Cooper YMCA and has previously worked as a personal trainer and wellness specialist.

Our guests will share their insights in a panel format and then continue the conversation through Q&A with attendees.
