Fall Break 2023: CityBuild 2040 in Schuyler

We are delighted that you are interested in participating in CityBuild 2040 in Schuyler, NE. Please complete this form ASAP but no later than Sunday, September 24. Please read all questions and statements carefully, as there is some important information about logistics and expectations below. We will share updates with you by Tuesday, September 26th.

Overview:
WHEN: Monday, October 16 and Tuesday, October 17 (Fall Break)
WHERE: Schuyler, NE
WHO: Honors students
WHAT/WHY: Work with and inspire students in grades K-5 on a two-day after-school "future city build" activity; mentor and work alongside local high school students; learn about Schuyler's economic development and network with community leaders; and form deeper connections with UNL students and staff.
HOW: UNL students will participate in the entire service trip (plus pre-trip training and post-trip evaluation) and will earn $300. In addition, transportation, lodging, and meals will be provided.

Tentative Schedule:
 

Monday
9:00 am: Meet at Knoll
9:30 am: Depart for Schuyler
11:00 am: Arrive in Schuyler
11:30 am: Lunch and sightseeing
2:00 pm: Set up for CityBuild
3:45 pm: CityBuild activity
6:30 pm: Dinner and social activity

Tuesday
Morning: Breakfast, speakers/tours
Early Afternoon: Lunch, speakers/tours, free time
2:30 pm: Set up for CityBuild
3:45 pm: CityBuild activity
6:00 pm: Showcase for parents with dinner
7:30 pm: Depart for Lincoln
9:00 pm: Arrive back to Knoll

Residency
Do you have an active on-campus appointment (are you currently working at UNL, in any role/department)?

(i.e. my friend ___ encouraged me to apply, opportunity to earn money, to build community, to have something to do over fall break, etc.)

The group will stay in a large room in the Schuyler Community Field House, a sporting facility in Schuyler NE. You will need to bring a pillow and a sleeping bag or sheet/blanket. You might also look into renting a sleeping bag and/or pad through Campus Recreation (https://crec.unl.edu/activities/0-outdoor-gear-rentals). There will be locker rooms with showers available. At least one University Honors Program staff member will be present.

If you have any accommodations needed related to sleeping or travel arrangements, please describe here (i.e. if you have a place to stay in/near Schuyler or prefer to sleep in a more private space; if you will be driving to and from the site on your own; wheelchair accessible van needed; etc).

Please type your name in the space above to indicate that you understand that you are required to attend ALL scheduled activities on October 16 and 17, including the educational and social components such as museum visits, business tours, group meals, and meetings with community leaders. Free time and optional activities will be noted on the itinerary. (If you are not traveling with the group to/from Lincoln, please see the start and end times on the itinerary for all activities taking place in Schuyler). Prior to the trip, you will be required to attend or watch a training, so you are prepared to help facilitate the CityBuild activity.

You will also be a representative of the University Honors Program. All scheduled trip activities will be drug and alcohol-free.

Honors may not be able to invite all interested students to participate. We will share updates with you by Tuesday, September 26th.
