Course description

Do you feel driven to make real and lasting change in your community? Is your voice one that will be heard? Will you better your community by serving in an elected position? Do you plan to run for public office in the future? This pop-up class is your first, best step towards future public service.

In this short-term, hands-on, ilearn@honors experience, you will be mentored by community leaders, elected officials, and seasoned campaign professionals. Through the non-partisan curriculum, you will explore various facets of democratic life, develop your leadership skills, design your own campaign, and learn the ins and outs of running for office. Following the class, you will be competitive and ready for future internships, campaign-related volunteering, public service, and similar professional development or post-graduation career opportunities.

Topics will include:

  • Developing your message
  • Recruiting a great staff
  • Doing effective research
  • Raising funds through events and courting donors
  • Managing a campaign budget
  • Interacting with the media effectively
  • Debating successfully

We will meet during the week of Fall Break, at the following times: Mon and Tue: 1-5pm; Wed, Thur, and Fri: 5-8pm. If you have a conflict that's holding you back from enrolling, let us know - we may be able to work around it!
