Pre-Law Open House: The University of Nebraska College of Law is holding an open house on Saturday, October 28 beginning at 9:15 am. This event is for those early in their undergraduate careers who are interested in studying law, and will provide sessions on law schools and applicants, preparation for law school, the law school experience, a mock class, career opportunities, and will close with an informal lunch. If you are interested, pick up a registration form at the Arts and Sciences Advising Office, call 472-2161, or email rcolberg1@unl.edu. New Student Enrollment Leaders Needed: The New Student Enrollment Office is now accepting applications for Orientation Leaders for the summer of 2007. Orientation Leader positions are open to students who are presently sophomores, junior or seniors. Many past orientation leaders have been in the Honors Program. For many students, being an Orientation Leader has been one of the most rewarding experiences of their college career. Living in Lincoln during the summer for free while making an hourly wage, gaining new friends, working with other leaders on campus, and impacting the lives of incoming freshmen are just a few of the benefits. You also have the opportunity to work with and get to know faculty and administration from the University. Application information is available on-line at http://admissions.unl.edu/nse/. Be sure to look at the right side of the website to find the application information. Applications are due on October 30 at 5:00 pm. Several questions are on the application and a reference must be turned in by October 30. Now is the time to think about applying. -- Reminders: New Publication: The Honors Program is considering the development of an Alumni publication and we are looking for students who are interested in being involved in this project. We would develop a staff responsible for an annual or biannual publication. If you are interested in being a part of this new adventure, please contact Ann Koopmann at akoopmann1@unl.edu or 472-3678 or stop by 104 Neihardt. ASUN announcement: The ASUN Government Liaison Committee (GLC) is seeking enthusiastic students who are interested in promoting University issues across Nebraska to become a part of Husker Web. GLC is a non-partisan ASUN committee primarily concerned with representing and forwarding the student body’s concerns to government officials. Working on one level by lobbying for specific issues, of concern to the student body and second, by administering public relation initiatives throughout. Husker Web would offer participating students the opportunity to be the local contact for a district of Nebraska, ideally their hometown district. GLC hopes to have all 49 legislative districts represented, with at least one contact for each district. Local student contacts would be in charge of circulating information in their district as well as responsible for writing letters to the editor of local newspapers and contacting representatives. Guidance for these tasks will be provided by GLC. Issues GLC is emphasizing this year include, Obtaining Tax-free Textbooks for UNL students, Initiative 423: Cap on State Spending Growth, Bringing Congressional Delegates to Campus, and Lincoln Police Department’s Disorderly House Policies. There is no set time commitment for Husker Web, although GLC may offer some optional public forums to achieve a greater understanding of the issues at hand. A key facet of GLC’s effectiveness is maintaining a consistent message, so Husker Web members will be asked to put aside personal political beliefs for the sake of cohesiveness. No action will ever be mandatory; it is perfectly acceptable if a member needs to “sit out” for an issue. Husker Web presents an exciting opportunity for students to make a positive difference for their University. Interested students should respond to GLC Chair, David Solheim, at HuskerWeb49@gmail.com and include their name, e-mail address, phone number, and permanent address by Friday, October 13th. Thank you and GLC looks forward to hearing from you! Master’s Week Opportunity: Patricia S. Peterson, a partner in Kutak Rock Law Firm, will be on campus for Master’s Week. She will be addressing such issues as the experience of working in a large firm and specializing, balancing the personal and professional life, management as part of the law firm experience, and opportunities in the law. Honors students interested in pursuing a career in law are invited to several events on Thursday, Nov. 2: a career talk, 12:10-12:50 pm, an informal reception. 4:40-5:30, and a dinner, 6:00-7:30. Cultural Diversity Retreat: The 19th Annual Cultural Diversity Retreat will take place at Camp Carol Joy Holling in Ashland on October 27-28. The purpose of this event is to begin a “process to change the face of UNL and break down the cultural barriers that may keep many in this community apart”. Serious discussion combined with fun make up the event. The cost is $10 per person, however, UNL Housing will underwrite the cost for anyone living in a residence hall.
