ASUN announcement: The ASUN Government Liaison Committee (GLC) is seeking enthusiastic students who are interested in promoting University issues across Nebraska to become a part of Husker Web. GLC is a non-partisan ASUN committee primarily concerned with representing and forwarding the student body’s concerns to government officials. Working on one level by lobbying for specific issues of concern to the student body and second, by administering public relation initiatives throughout. Husker Web would offer participating students the opportunity to be the local contact for a district of Nebraska, ideally their hometown district. GLC hopes to have all 49 legislative districts represented, with at least one contact for each district. Local student contacts would be in charge of circulating information in their district as well as responsible for writing letters to the editor of local newspapers and contacting representatives. Guidance for these tasks will be provided by GLC. Issues GLC is emphasizing this year include, Obtaining Tax-free Textbooks for UNL students, Initiative 423: Cap on State Spending Growth, Bringing Congressional Delegates to Campus, and Lincoln Police Department’s Disorderly House Policies. There is no set time commitment for Husker Web, although GLC may offer some optional public forums to achieve a greater understanding of the issues at hand. A key facet of GLC’s effectiveness is maintaining a consistent message, so Husker Web members will be asked to put aside personal political beliefs for the sake of cohesiveness. No action will ever be mandatory; it is perfectly acceptable if a member needs to “sit out” for an issue. Husker Web presents an exciting opportunity for students to make a positive difference for their University. Interested students should respond to GLC Chair, David Solheim, at HuskerWeb49@gmail.com and include their name, e-mail address, phone number, and permanent address by Friday, October 13th. Thank you and GLC looks forward to hearing from you!
