Please return it immediately -- Registration: If you have not already done so, be certain to make an appointment with your advisor to discuss registration issues. If you need the suppressed call number of an H class, contact the main Honors office or the departmental office. Honors requirements: First and second year students must complete at least 6 hours of Honors work each year, regardless of the number of hours completed in the previous year. Students must complete at least 15 hours by the end of the sophomore year. Third and fourth year students must complete at least 3 hours of Honors work each year, regardless of the number of hours completed in the previous two years. Students must complete at least 9 hours in these two years for a total of at least 24 Honors hours, to include UHON 395H and the thesis. -- Note: We will NOT be supporting an Honors summer reading course in the summer of 2005, so you must complete your Honors credits during the August-May academic year by enrolling in Honors classes or by contracting. -- If you intend to remove the H designation from a contracted class, the faculty member must agree to do so and must notify Dr. Berger or Dr. Lyons by Friday, November 12. -- Announcing a new class ( 1- credit, UHON 198H Scholarship Workshop; Call # 6067) This is a class intended for sophomores and juniors to work on their scholarship applications and to complete them in a timely manner. Included will be work on the following: personal statements, resumes, help with obtaining good letters of recommendation, research on graduate school programs, and opportunities to interact with other students who are going through the same process. Focus will be on the following scholarships: Rhodes, Marshall, Gates-Cambridge, Truman, and Fulbright. A completed application is the goal at the end of the class. Meets on Mondays from 4:00-4:50 in Neihardt. - New Science Writing Class If you're an Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Journalism or CASNR major with a GPA of at least 2.75, you're invited to enroll in News 498/898: Science Writing to sharpen your skills in communicating about science. You'll practice methods used by the best writers in both science and journalism to write clearly about science. You can use this class to polish the writing you're assigned in your science classes, such as your senior thesis and other research papers--even lab notes! The class will meet on Wednesday, 1:30-4:20, in Andersen Hall. Talk with your advisor about how NEWS 498/898: Science Writing fits into your program of study. Both presentations and poster displays will showcase the research efforts and creative activities of some of UNL's undergraduates in Agronomy and Horticulture, Animal Science, Architecture, Art and Art History, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science and Engineering, Educational Psychology, Electrical Engineering, English, Food Science and Technology, Geosciences, History, Management, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, Plant Pathology, Public Policy Center, Psychology, School of Natural Resources, Libraries, Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, and Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. Contact Laura Damuth, UCARE Coordinator, for more details (Ldamuth1@unl.edu). -- Study Rooms: To clarify the policy for reserving rooms in Neihardt: To reserve rooms such as the Gray or Courtyard Parlor, the Birch or Pine Room, etc., you need to be a resident of Cather, Pound or Neihardt, or on the Honors Board or Honors Ambassadors. You must reserve these rooms through the Neihardt Front Desk. To reserve a study room (on the first floor of Heppner), you must enter your name and time in the appropriate section of the Reservations book in the Resource/Reading Room. You must be a member of the University Honors Program. If you are having difficulties with the computers in the computer lab, please complete a problem form and submit it to the main Honors office. If you're having difficulty establishing your account, you can still log on to Blackboard on computers in other locations on campus. -- The sixth annual Fall Academic Challenge Tournament (FACT) will be October 31st at 1:30 in the Union. It is like a quiz bowl...only better. Tournament format includes name that book, biography questions, and general knowledge questions in various contest formats. Prizes will be awarded for the top three teams. Teams of four need to register by October 29th. Limited to the first 15 teams. E-mail team members' names to unlhonorsboard@yahoo.com to register. Sponsored by the Honors Program Student Advisory Board. -- Student Foundation Funds Available for Student Groups The University of Nebraska Student Foundation is pleased to have funds available for student groups. The funds will be awarded to finance events, projects or programs beneficial to the University of Nebraska, its students, and the community. Applications are now available at the City and East Campus Union Student Involvement offices and on the SF website at www.unl.edu/sf. They are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, October 29. -- NSE Leaders Needed The New Student Enrollment Office is now accepting applications for Orientation Leaders for the summer of 2005. Orientation Leader positions are open to students who are presently, sophomores, junior or seniors. Typically many of the orientation leaders are participants in the Honors Program. For many students, being an Orientation Leader has been one of the most rewarding experiences of their college career. Living in Lincoln during the summer for free while making an hourly wage, gaining new friends, working with other leaders on campus, and impacting the lives of incoming freshmen are just a few of the benefits. You also have the opportunity to work with and get to know faculty and administration from the University. Application information is available on-line at www.unl.edu/nse .
