Dec.18: First Semester Commencement Dec. 24 - Jan. 2, 2005: Holiday Closedown -- Please bear with us on problems with our recent issues of HP News. We are, indeed, proofreading them. However, we're experiencing technical difficulties in sending them out. We're in the process of trying to set up a Blackboard site and will handle them from there if and when it's available. Till then, if the spelling errors are driving you crazy, read HP News on the HP website, where it is posted and archived. -- Freshmen: Attend those Peer Mentor group meetings! They're extremely important and you'll receive a good deal of valuable information in them. If you don't know who your mentor is or you have a scheduling conflict, contact Dr. Lyons at klyons2@unl.edu. -- Seniors: If you plan to graduate from the Honors Program in December, please contact Dr. Berger at pberger1@unl.edu as soon as possible. -- If you are having difficulties with the computers in the computer lab, please complete a problem form and submit it to the main Honors office. If you're having difficulty establishing your account, you can still log on to Blackboard on computers in other locations on campus. -- Note: We will NOT be supporting an Honors summer reading course in the summer of 2005, so you must complete your Honors credits during the August-May academic year by enrolling in Honors classes or by contracting. -- Book scholarship: a reminder that ALL textbooks MUST be purchased through the UNL Bookstore. If a required text is not available in the UNL Bookstore, you must request them to order it. You will not be reimbursed for text purchased elsewhere. In addition, all texts must be returned at the end of the semester. You will be charged the UNL Bookstore's buyback price should you elect to retain any texts. -- HONORS SEMESTER IN WALES WITH UNCW Again for Spring 2005, the Honors Scholars Program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will sponsor a semester study abroad program in Great Britain at the University of Wales at Swansea. We welcome honors students from other universities to join us. The semester will be hosted by Dr. Herb Berg, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at UNCW and Associate Director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, http://people.uncw.edu/bergh/uws2005/ The Setting: The University of Wales at Swansea, overlooking Swansea Bay, is situated within a large area of landscaped parkland within walking distance of the city center. To the west is Gower Peninsula with broad bays and sandy coves. Swansea is a modern city of 200,000 with well-equipped leisure center and cultural facilities. Swansea can be reached by train from London in about 3 hours. Course of study: Students may earn 15-18 credits at Swansea by enrolling in four courses and completing an internship. The course load will be as follows: Honors seminar: 2 credits Internship: 4 credits Courses of the student's choice from the Swansea catalog: 9-12 credits Students from any major are welcome. Students must be honors students in good standing at their home universities. The students will be assisted by the American Studies Office at the University of Wales at Swansea in course selection and internship arrangements. Dr. Berg will teach the honors seminar and be available to arrange field trips and other events. Internship: Internships will be arranged in an area of the student's choice. Some examples are Swansea City Council, BBC Radio, Magistrate Court, the local Archaeological Trust, hospitals, county environmental protection agency, museums, schools, and financial establishments. Housing: Students will live with British students in the Hendrefoilan Student Village, an apartment style living arrangement. For more information, please feel free to contact Dr. Berg (bergh@uncw.edu) or Ms. Elizabeth A. Adams, Director, Education Abroad Programs at UNC Wilmington (adamse@uncw.edu) with any questions, or check with Dr. Lyons. A number of our students have participated in this study abroad experience with positive results, so check out this possibility.
