Each semester, a few people, in agreement with faculty members, decide not to complete the contract portion of a class. As always, the faculty member is the person to decide how to proceed in this instance. However, we will no longer allow this change to occur after the Friday which falls two weeks before the end of classes. After that time, the Honors designation will stand and the grade in the Honors class will be affected. Of course, the faculty member always has the option to give an Incomplete. -- Last call! Deadline to commit to these classes is Monday, Feb. 16. UHON 395H, Introduction to Coastal Marine Studies. June 13-July3, Bar Harbor, Maine. Using the coast of Maine as an expanded classroom, this course will examine not only elements of marine biology but also the diverse issues surrounding the experience of living in a coastal area. You will explore such things as disparate as tidal pools, geological background, ecology specific to the area, demographics and anthropology, art and literature, political issues concerning the fishing industry, and the preservation of historical sites. In-class lecture time is balanced by coastal field work. You will be involved in oceanographic research on the COA research boat, take a commercial whale watch tour, take a trip on the Dive-In theater boat which explores the marine critters, and take the nature cruise with a trip to Frenchboro Island (all included in the fees). You do NOT have to be a biology major to participate, and no prerequisites are involved. Contact Dr. Lyons immediately if you're interested. UHON 198H: Ireland: Her Culture and Her People. June 19-July 3. Tour Ireland with an experienced guide who will put you in touch with local Irish culture. Visit the Aran Islands, the Dingle Peninsula, Sligo, and Dublin. This year's keynote speech will feature Ms. Colleen Rowley, the "FBI Whistleblower" and one of Time Magazine's 2002 Persons of the Year. Ms. Rowley will address "Ethics & Integrity" in the legal profession. -- The Offices of Research and Academic Affairs are jointly sponsoring a seminar series on the NSF ADVANCE program. The goal of the ADVANCE program is to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers. NSF seeks to support new approaches to improving the climate for women in U.S. academic institutions and to facilitate women's advancement to the highest ranks of academic leadership. To date, 25 institutions have received Institutional Transformation funding to enhance the recruitment, retention, and career advancement of women faculty in science and engineering fields. UNL is planning to submit a proposal for the next round of competition. The ADVANCE seminar series includes presentations by recipients of NSF Institutional Transformation awards. Speakers will discuss the successes and challenges of implementing the ADVANCE program at their respective institutions. The sessions will be of particular interest to department chairs/heads, faculty, and graduate students.
