Course description and information: This course will examine not only elements of marine biology but also the diverse issues surrounding the experience of living in a coastal area. You will explore such things as disparate as tidal pools, geological background, ecology specific to the area, demographics and anthropology, art and literature, political issues concerning the fishing industry, and the preservation of historical sites. You will be involved in oceanographic research on the COA research boat, take a commercial whale watch tour, take a trip on the Dive-In theater boat which explores the marine critters, and go kayaking in Frenchman's Bay. However, the course will actually begin in February, when, once a month for the spring semester, you will read texts which will help to introduce them to the experience. Dr. Lyons will lead that discussion on the UNL campus, while a Helen Hess, COA faculty member specializing in marine biology, will lead the course on that campus. Come hear more about this from students who have participated in the course. -- Call for NEW UCARE Project Proposals, AY 2003-04 The Office of Undergraduate Studies is announcing a call for the next round of UCARE proposals for the academic year 2003-04.
