As the name implies, this listing will change each week. Please check it weekly, as from now on, only items relating directly to the Honors Program will appear in HP News. -- An HP News concerning the textbook scholarship was distributed at the end of last week. Hard copies of the new policies are available in the Resource Room. -- Note Change: Tail gate with the Honors Advisory Board! This Saturday, October 4 in the Blue TV Lounge from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM (before the Troy St. Game). Enjoy FREE DONUTS, JUICE, COFFEE, HOT COCOA, and the company of fellow Honors Students from all parts of the University. GO BIG RED!! -- Note: Please check your WAM page and, if necessary, update your local address and phone. It's essential to have current information listed with UNL. -- Attention first year students: Attend those peer mentor groups! You will find valuable information in the meetings, particularly concerning Honors Program requirements. If you have not been attending the meetings, you will receive a message concerning this shortly. -- The Resource Room contains such things as a dictionary and thesaurus, foreign language dictionaries, publications, graduate and professional school preparation books, information from international affairs, Honors Program forms and information, and will continue to grow as we receive suggestions from you. Please DO NOT remove publications from this room: they are there for all Honors students. The new computer in the Resource Room will shortly contain a number of bookmarks for such things as competitive scholarships, sites pertaining to graduate and professional school preparation, style manuals, etc. Do not hesitate to use these sites, but please do not bookmark your personal sites. Study Rooms: All Honors Program students may reserve and use them. Please observe the 2 hour limit. Reservation forms are in the notebook in the Resource Room. -- Computer lab, a few requests, please: pick up after yourselves?boxes for recyclable paper are provided conserve paper--do not print out one-line emails or entire web sites, do use recyclable paper for drafts. Thanks! Also, all forms for the program are now available on the website. You can print them off, but cannot submit them online; you must bring them into the main Honors Office. -- Call for NEW UCARE Project Proposals, AY 2003-04 The Office of Undergraduate Studies is announcing a call for the next round of UCARE proposals for the academic year 2003-04. These one-year only awards will be available to students from October 15, 2003 until June 30, 2004. The application deadline for these one-year only awards is Friday, October 3. Applications are available on the UCARE website (http://www.unl.edu/ucare/forms.html) and online application submission issuggested. The Council of Students will now be comprised of 3 grad students and 5 undergraduate students. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the status of women on campus and to have input concerning that issue. Anyone interested in serving on the Council of Students should apply through ASUN and Student Involvement or contact Dr. Lyons. HP NEWS FLASH!! October 6, 2003 Steven Komarow, a Washington based correspondent for USE Today, will be on campus on Tuesday, Oct. 7 to participate in campus activities throughout the day. He will be giving a presentation about the time he spent as an embedded reporter in Iraq at 3:30 in the city campus union auditorium. Honors students have the opportunity to have breakfast with him at 7:45 on Tuesday. Please contact Dr. Lyons at klyons2@unl.edu if you are interested. We can accommodate about 20 people; if more are interested, we may try to move to a larger location. Dr. Lyons will be in touch with everyone interested on Monday to confirm the location. Following is a excerpt from his biographical material: Steven Komarow is a Washington Correspondent for USA TODAY, the largest circulation newspaper in the United States. Until recently, he served as their Berlin Correspondent, reporting on events throughout Central Europe and Russia. Since September 11, 2001, he has done extensive coverage in Afghanistan, and more recently was an "embedded reporter" with the American troops in Iraq. He will soon be returning to Baghdad to continue his reporting on the situation in Iraq.
