Ashley Thelen of Mitchell, S.D., Valerie Eckrich of Lincoln, and Jessica Chekal and Qianli Wang of Omaha are UNL's first cohort of Beckman Scholars for the 2013-14 academic year. The award provides scholarship funds to each student to conduct research under the direction of a UNL faculty mentor. The mentors are Paul Blum, Bessey Professor of Biological Sciences; Concetta DiRusso, professor of biochemistry; Luwen Zhang, associate professor of biological sciences; and Melanie Simpson, associate professor of biochemistry. Mary Burke, an Honors Program graduating senior, has received a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship for research she conducted on Constraint Satisfaction Problems with Berthe Choueiry in the Department of Computer Science.

Four Honors students were awarded internship scholarships from the Office of Career Services to participate in internships this summer. They are:

Amara Ann Meyer (Psychology) will work in the Office of Senator Deb Fischer in Washington, D.C.
Kent Stejskal (History, Political Science), will work at the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.
Margo Berends (Economics, Political Science) will be at the Institute of International Education in Washington, D.C.
Micah Wullschleger (English, Anthropology) will work with the D.C. public schools in Washington, D.C.

The internships are offered by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Juan Franco.





Garrett Allen and Tanner Sorensen have both been awarded fellowships from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Diesnst (DAAD) to study in Germany next year.  Allen has received a fellowship to conduct independent research and Sorensen has received a fellowship to attend a Master’s program at a German university. Allen and Sorensen were both participants in UNL’s German studies department semester-long exchange program, Deutsch in Deutschland, at Humboldt University in Berlin in the spring of last year.
